Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied directly to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The treatment is quick, comfortable, and completely non-invasive. There are no needles and no drilling involved. The tooth is cleaned, a bonding solution is applied, and the sealant material is painted on and hardened with a curing light. They’re especially helpful during the years when permanent molars first emerge, typically between ages 6 and 12, when children may not yet have developed the brushing habits needed to keep those surfaces clean.
Sealants are generally recommended for children as soon as their permanent molars come in. The first set typically erupts around age 6, and the second set around age 12. Applying sealants shortly after these teeth emerge gives them the best protection during the years when cavity risk is highest.

Some children may also benefit from sealants on primary teeth if those teeth have deep grooves that are difficult to clean.
Sealants work best as part of a broader approach to pediatric oral health. We pair them with pediatric fluoride treatments, regular cleanings, and personalized oral hygiene guidance so your child gets comprehensive protection on all fronts. While fluoride strengthens enamel throughout the mouth, sealants specifically target the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where most decay occurs.
