Special needs dentistry refers to dental care provided for children who have physical, developmental, behavioral, cognitive, or sensory conditions that require a modified approach. This can include children with autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, ADHD, cerebral palsy, sensory processing challenges, anxiety disorders, and many other conditions.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes that children with special health care needs often require care that is comprehensive, continuously accessible, and coordinated to reflect the full picture of their health. At Kids Dental Center, that philosophy drives everything we do.
Every child who comes through our doors is different, and we take that seriously. Before any appointment, we take time to learn about your child, including what works, what doesn’t, and what has made past dental experiences difficult. That information shapes how we approach the entire visit, from the way we communicate to the pace we keep.
For some children, that may mean a slower, more gradual introduction to the dental environment. For others, it may mean modifying the physical setup, using specific communication strategies, or adjusting how we use dental tools. We work closely with parents and caregivers throughout this process because you know your child better than anyone.
For children whose needs make a traditional dental visit difficult or unsafe to complete comfortably, sedation may be an option worth exploring. Our children’s sedation dentistry options allow us to provide necessary care in a way that is safe, calm, and manageable for your child.
We discuss sedation openly with every family, explaining the options clearly and answering every question before moving forward. We understand that many parents have concerns about sedation, and we want you to feel informed and confident in whatever direction we take together. Safety and comfort are always the priority.
Children with special needs are not exempt from the everyday dental challenges other kids face. In fact, some conditions and medications can make children more vulnerable to tooth decay, gum concerns, and other oral health issues. That is why consistent, preventive care is so important.
Our children’s cleanings and exams are adapted to fit each child’s pace and comfort level. We do not rush, and we do not push a child further than they are ready to go. Building trust during routine visits makes it easier to provide care when more complex treatment becomes necessary.

Our team at Kids Dental Center is built around the belief that kids deserve the best, and that includes kids whose dental visits require a little more planning, patience, and care. We accept Medicaid, AHCCCS, and most PPO insurance plans. For families without coverage, we offer flexible financing through CareCredit and Cherry Financing, with options as low as 0% interest for up to two years. We also accept walk-ins, and if calling ahead is easier for your family’s schedule, we are happy to accommodate that too.
